During the coldest, darkest period of the year, Hobart is hosting a gothy three
week festival called Dark Mofo. Dark Mofo is a sensual, theatrical and gothic
celebration held at MONA (Museum Of Old And New Art), the Tasmanian
Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG), a public art playground at Dark Park, at the
historic Odeon Theatre, and home of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra,
Federation Concert Hall. Ever since MONA first opened, Hobart has developed
a reputation for hosting all things artistically weird and culturally wonderful!
Dark Mofo is certainly no exception to this. After a successful two week festival
last year in Hobart, this year they have decided to extend Dark Mofo over three
weeks!
This year Dark Mofo kicks off in June with a Prelude weekend featuring ‘Dark
and Dangerous Thoughtsʼ before weeks one and two unleash the proper
festival. We are eagerly awaiting this years program which is packed full of
more than 700 international and local artists… and of course a few surprises
along the way! The festival is all about exploring human nature, darkness and
light, death, birth and renewal.
A highlight of the festival is the Winter Feast which has been extremely popular
in past years. The feast attracts food lovers and cultural travellers from all over
the world to dine on the Hobart waterfront. Letʼs not forget about there Winter
Solstice ritual where last year, nude swimmers jumped into the freezing water
for a swim!
Lenna of Hobart is the perfect place to stay during the Dark Mofo Festival.
