MONA (Museum of Old and New Art)

The Museum of Old and New Art, also known as MONA is a truly unique experience that is well worth a visit.  It is located 11 km north of Hobart and is a short 25min ferry ride or 20min car drive.  A trip to MONA is something that you will not soon forget and provides the perfect opportunity to disregard the hustle and bustle of the outside world and enjoy art history at its finest.

MONA is unlike anything that you have ever seen before, a three level labyrinthine of eerie spaces designed to get you lost and confused. Each display area is spacious and unique, allowing for silent observation and reflection.  The displays are arranged with impeccable attention to detail and are an intriguing combination of historical masterpieces and modern photography!

A great feature of MONA, that has received great reviews from visitors, is it’s amazing technology.  On arrival at the museum, you are handed an iPhone with headphones.  You can then hold the phone up in an room, at any display and it identifies which artwork you are near and provides information related to the item.

For David Walsh fans, MONA has hundred of his artwork on display.  Another highlight at MONA is Kryptos by Brigits Ozolins.  Kryptos consists of three box like chambers that you navigate your way through.  The last chamber has a small doorway which you have to crouch down to enter.  When you enter the small doorway and look up you are confronted with the surprise of your own reflection in a mirror!

For a limited time, MONA has the Museum of Everything available for visitors. The Museum Of Everything is the worlds first wandering museum and is currently set up in the basement of MONA until 2 April 2018!  The Museum Of Everything started as a temporary exhibition in London and after fantastic reviews has since travelled around the world including Russia, the Netherlands and now Hobart!  The Museum Of Everything contains art that is strange and dark and is described as the art that was never meant to be seen

Besides the museum, there is also CineMona which shows films throughout the day.  There are also cellar door wine tastings and wine and beer tours available throughout the day.  A new bar and restaurant ‘Faro’ is a European inspired bar that serves delectable share plates with a unique greek style.
